Consider the environmental pressure associated with many types of vinyl or carpet floors. There is the drain on energy associated with the making of the new product, the resources used in its fitting - and then at the end of its lifecycle the old product needs to go to landfill if it cannot be recycled.

Barefoot floors can just be covered over with new flooring at the end of their lifetime, which massively reduces landfill pressure.
